Amedeo Modigliani’s painting of a sultry nude becomes second most expensive artwork ever sold at auction.

Amedeo Modigliani’s Nu Couché has sold for $170.4 million (£113 million) at Christie’s, making it the second-highest auction price for any artwork.

Nu Couché (Reclining Nude) was sold in New York On November 9, 2015 night after a protracted bidding battle; it was bought by Mr.Liu Yiqian, who has gained a reputation for breaking records in his pursuit of priceless artworks to display in his own museums in Shanghai.

The 1917-1918 painting had the highest pre-sale estimate of any lot in the three sales by the major auction houses of Impressionist, modern, postwar and contemporary art; the canvas depicts a naked, dark-haired woman reclining on a red couch with a blue pillow, Considered one of Modigliani’s best known works, the painting nearly created a scandal when it was first exhibited in Paris.
